Conductivity sensors are simple devices in principle: two electrodes, a driving voltage, and a current measurement. In practice, most of the maintenance burden in a water plant comes from the electrode surface rather than from the electronics. Metal electrodes polarise, foul and slowly change their cell constant, and the resulting drift forces frequent cleaning, repeated calibration and, eventually, replacement. The DEC790 digital conductivity sensor from Daruifuno takes a different route by using graphite as the electrode material, and the practical effect on maintenance planning is significant.
When a voltage is applied to two electrodes in water, ions accumulate at the electrode surface and create a counter voltage that opposes the applied field. This polarization effect is small in concentrated water but becomes dominant in low conductivity water, where the current is already tiny. The visible symptom is a reading that creeps upward after a rinse step, or a zero point that no longer returns to its original value after cleaning. Operators then compensate by calibrating more often, which consumes time and standard solutions without solving the underlying problem. A graphite surface polarises far less than a polished metal surface, so the zero point stays stable and the calibration interval can be extended.
In wastewater, the challenge is different. Oil films, biofilm, calcium scale and suspended solids deposit on the electrode and create a parallel conduction path, which reads as a false increase in dissolved solids. Metal electrodes are also easily damaged during cleaning: abrasive pads remove the passive layer and change the cell constant permanently. Graphite tolerates repeated cleaning with mild detergent or weak acid, and the measuring unit of the DEC790 is a replaceable module, so a heavily worn cell can be swapped in the field without disturbing the cable, the process connection or the Modbus address.

| Aspect | Metal electrode cell | Graphite two-electrode cell (DEC790) |
|---|---|---|
| Polarization in pure water | Noticeable, zero point drifts | Strongly suppressed, stable zero |
| Cleaning tolerance | Surface easily damaged | Tolerates repeated chemical cleaning |
| Chemical resistance | Attacked by acids and chlorides | Inert in mild acid and alkali |
| Calibration workload | Frequent re-zeroing | Monthly check usually enough |
| End of life | Replace the probe | Replace the measuring module only |
Many conductivity problems are blamed on the sensor when the real cause is the analog loop. A 4~20 mA transmitter has to be scaled, trimmed and earthed, and a long cable run next to a variable frequency drive will add noise to a signal that is already small. The DEC790 publishes conductivity, TDS, salinity and temperature digitally over RS485 MODBUS-RTU, already linearised and temperature compensated. The probe draws about 0.2 W from 9~24 VDC, which makes solar and battery backed remote stations practical and allows several probes to share one bus and one power rail.

Three habits extend the life of any conductivity installation, regardless of electrode material. First, install the probe where the pipe stays full and bubbles cannot collect on the measuring face. Second, keep the sensor cable separated from power and motor feeders. Third, set the cleaning interval from observed fouling rather than from a fixed calendar. With a graphite cell, the third item usually becomes the only routine task, because polarization drift no longer forces repeated recalibration. Calibration at 25 °C with fresh standard solutions, and a multi-point check after any measuring module replacement, will keep the reading traceable to laboratory results.
Electrode material is not a marketing detail; it determines how often a plant sends a technician to a wet well. Graphite two-electrode cells such as the one used in the DEC790 shift the balance from reactive maintenance to planned maintenance, and the digital Modbus interface removes the analog errors that often masquerade as sensor drift. Plants evaluating a conductivity upgrade can request the full technical documentation and a sample unit for side-by-side testing against their existing instrument.
